USD100m for COVID-19 Vaccines.
By Faith Shingirai Mundere.
The government has set aside USD100m to procure COVID-19 vaccines which will be administered to citizens nationwide.
“The vaccines will be administered to at least 60% of the country’s population” Finance and Economic Development Permanent Secretary Mr George Guvamatanga said
The vaccines will be secured through an African Union (AU) led initiative which has managed to procure 270 million vaccines in the continent to date.
Pfizer and AstraZeneca are set to supply the vaccines through the Serum Institute of India and Johnson Johnson.
“Vaccinating more than half of the country’s population will induce herd immunity. This happens when a large population of a community is immune to a disease thereby decreasing the spread of the virus” Mr Guvamatanga said
The development follows after strict level 4 lockdown measures were put in place to curb the surge in Corona virus cases in the country.
