Toyota takes lead in Global Automotive Selling

By Tatenda Sanyahawa

For the first time since the year 2015, Toyota has overtaken the German Volkswagen to become World Top Selling Automotive Company, recently released statistics reveal.

In a report accessed by France 24 on Thursday, in 2020, the Japanese giant car maker sold some 9.53 million vehicle units beating German Volkswagen which sold 9.3 million vehicles in the same period.

Although the figures were -11% and -15% short of 2019 records, for both Toyota and Volkswagen respectively due to COVID-19 disruptions, Toyota was able to mitigate the pandemic’s effect overtaking the German Car Manufacturer.

“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Toyota was able to continue cooperate activities through comprehensive implementation of various infection prevention measures and by working together with partners including suppliers and dealers” said Toyota in a statement recorded by AFP

Toyota’s lead comes as a no surprise since even in Low Economically developed countries like Zimbabwe it led in the 2020 vehicle market share with 18.5% stake way above Ford which had 9.7%.
